The way of women’s resistances to patriarchy in â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† is on the surface a mysterious story about a woman suffering from depression to mad, but actually, it reveals the oppression of women from their patriarchal families. In the late 19th century, women couldn’t enjoy the freedom they do today, and most of them suffered from hysteria. The narrator of â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† is a typical example of those women who live with low social status. In my opinion, the reason resulting in her lower social situation is the narrator’s retreat from the reality, and the narrator must break the tradition of patriarchy if she wants more rights and free. In this story, the narrator’s†¦show more content†¦Even though the narrator was discontented with her oppressed circumstance, she still submitted to the man-dominant society. The narrator always consoled herself, â€Å"John loves me so† and â€Å"he takes all care from me, and so I feel basely ungrateful not to value it more†(Gilman 89). The reasons why â€Å"I† would like to follow the patriarchy may be women’s economic dependence. In â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper†, the narrator’s husband earned money as a physician and she has no income. If a woman has to depend on her husband, she won’t have equality to men. The narrator’s husband cares her less and less because of her dependence on him. Sometimes, he â€Å"is away all day, and even some nights†(Gilman 89). And the narrator’s retreat didn’t make her get the rights of writing and considering. It just made her hysteria get worse. Another reason for the narrator’s silence may be her cares about her children. Although the narrator’s disgust to the wallpaper increased, she decided to live in the nursery to face to the paper because â€Å"if we had not used it, that blessed child would have! What a fortunate escape†(Gilman 94). When the narrator found that the patriarchy could have negative impacts on her children, she tried to change the social situation. That means the narrator decides to challenge the patriarchy for the offspring. As a result, the narrator didn’t â€Å"want to leave now until [she has] found it out†(97). It is a signal that the narrator would notShow MoreRelated The Variety of Feminisms and their Contributions to Gender Equality by Judith Lorber1120 Words   |  5 Pagesimprove women’s status.
